I’m sitting in the library attempting to do some work for my class that starts in 30 minutes. I have procrastinated all week and I still can’t seem to focus. I am fascinated by the lack of actual work going on around me as well. The guy next to me is watching Blink-182 music videos. There are 2 people on facebook in my direct line of vision. Nobody is actually reading anything. The library seems to be just a hang-out while waiting to go to class. It is never quiet when I’m here and the conversations I overhear are mostly about non-intellectual things. Most people have their phone out on the table next to them and half of the people are wearing headphones to drown out the noise around them while they further distract themselves with music blaring directly into their ears. I had a chat with some friends on Sunday about the ‘young generation’ and how they are all being raised into a life of distractions and multitasking. They are getting their homework done, but how can they possibly be reaching the same depth of understanding? I am somewhere in between that new generation and the old one that talks about how they remember going to school without the internet and mobile phones. I have this stuff now. I have a smart phone and I use facebook a few times a week and (sometimes) update a blog. I get email updates that regularly take me away from my studies. I like to think I’m still fairly efficient though. I say this only because I know people who waste a lot more time than I do.
Anyway, procrastination is just an excuse to not work, and it will always be (has always been) around. I’m interested in finding out what people did to procrastinate before all of this stuff. How did people spend their ‘not-actually-working’ time? If they were sitting at the library not studying, what did they do before Blink-182 videos were on YouTube? When they wanted to procrastinate by writing about procrastination (for nobody in particular), did they write by hand on a piece of ruled paper? in cursive? that would take forever!
I just wrote this entire blog entry without checking my email and I’m feeling very efficient so I think I’ll get back to my homework.
